Thanks to the NiE pullout, teachers in Kuala Kangsar learnt new techniques of conducting English lessons.

SUNGAI Siput may be a quiet and sleepy town to many but that misconception was proven wrong by 40 English teachers from the Kuala Kangsar district.

The teachers were enthusiastic and immersed themselves in the various activities conducted at The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) workshop in SMK Methodist, Sungai Siput.

The teachers, who came from 17 schools in the district, made collages, told creative stories and even acted during the four-hour workshop conducted by Star-NiE freelance trainer Lucille Dass.

“This is my first time training the teachers in Sungai Siput and they have given very positive responses to the modules and activities conducted.

Engaging: Teachers presenting their group story through a collage of images during the workshop.

“They were eager to learn how to use The Star newspaper to teach their English classes and add an extra methodology to their teaching,” she said.

Stating that teachers needed to vary their teaching methods, she added that the workshop helped them focus on creating both activity-based and learner-centred teaching sessions through the NiE pullout.

SMK Methodist teacher S. Jegatheesan, who hosted the workshop with support from the Kuala Kangsar District Education Office, said he had been teaching using The Star newspaper since early this year.

“I wanted to give my students something different after having taught English for 22 years and that was when I decided to try out my lessons using the NiE pullout.

“Now, I find that it has made my classes more interesting and the students are having fun while learning English,” he said.

Another teacher in the school, K. Baskaran, 49, felt the workshop was very good.

“I face the challenge of having to teach the language to a big group of students and it is very hard to get their attention in class. After seeing how the pullout can be used effectively, I now believe it will bring a positive change in the learning environment,” said Baskaran, who taught Mathematics for 23 years and only began teaching an English class last year.

“Using the pullout brings enthusiasm in the class and besides learning English, students can learn more about the world,” he added.

Teacher S. Jayinthi, 37, from SMK Tok Muda Abdul Aziz has been using the newspaper in her Form Six English classes for six years.

“Using the newspaper has helped my students improve their reading, pronunciation and vocabulary as they learn new words each time,” she said.

SMK Bukit Merchu teacher Nurul Omar said she enjoyed the workshop and would recommend her school to use the pullout in lessons.

“I learnt a new teaching methodology through the workshop and I will try to bring it to my Form Two and Form Three classes,” she said.

Star-NiE is a 12-page pullout divided into English, grammar and literature components. The syllabus-based pullout is a treasure trove of ready-made activities for teachers to adapt and implement in the classrooom.

The pullouts are distributed with The Star every Wednesday and are only available to schools which order the newspaper.

Special discounts and packages are available for school subscription. For enquiries, please call The Star’s Customer Care Unit at 03-7967 1777 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. The Star-NiE programme is jointly sponsored with Pizza Hut.
